What is symbol of a blue globe on a unit icon

What does it mean?

That might be a mod icon. When you mod a unit, the game picks a random icon and name for the new unit template and then applies it to the modded unit and puts it in your cities' production lists. You can edit both name and icon manually if you want, and I think one of the icons to choose from is a globe.
They're there so you can tell your various unit designs apart.

I know I am digging a thread from the grave but I had the same questionning about that blue globe icon. In my case, the icon was located in the lower left corner of the unit icon, not in the upper left where you have the mod icon.

I noticed that this icon on two Dvar units: the prospecter and the Earth Crusher. It happens that both of those unit has strategie map abilities: Prospect and World crack respectively. Based on that, I assume that this is how AoW is informing us that an ability is usable at the strategic level, kind of like the icon for the strategic map operations.
