Everyone need to buy the game?

If you wanted to play with 4 others do they all need to buy the game? Or can you invite those without the game?

For an online match using Scythe built-in option, yes. otherwise you should try to stream your local play to other friends, using https://store.steampowered.com/remoteplay#together or a similar service like https://parsecgaming.com/ it is sufficient that only the host owns the game and catch friends in a virtual hotseat.

We tried this method last night. Seems to be some major challenges, unless we missed something, which is HIGHLY possible. When people join via stream play, we all see the same board and all actions. Which means we see the combat cards, you can see the person select their combat level in a fight, no way to really view your objectives privately.. Is this just a thing where you have to tell someone to close their eyes, etc?

you are streaming your display to your audience/friends. There is no other way but to ask your friends to close their eyes when you want to see your cards, etc. But it's free for your friends to play this game, at least there's that.

RemotePlayTogether never really worked for us unfortunately, maybe due to slower internet on the other side who knows.

We ended up buying 2 versions for me and my gf during a sale to have a better experience when playing with aother friend in another country.
