I have a wired xbox360 controller that I use for PC gaming and it doesn't have issues on any games that I use it on.
I've went through some forums before I decided to settle for game side issues. I would never go ahead to post a rant about something I didn't fully research prior so instead of picking your narrow minded point of view and passing it as a fact I would advise you to take a step back and only participate in the discussion if you have something to add.
As for inconsistent framerate and crashing, yes that IS something to do with your configuration. Either you have your settings too high for your computer to handle or you have driver issues. (Or, possibly but HIGHLY unlikely the game doesn't support your specific video card. But any card released in the last year should work fine. Even my old nvidia 8800gts ran the game fine before I upgraded)
Or, the least likely culprit but still possible, you somehow got a corrupted installation.
Possible fixes: If you turned off vsync, turn it back on. That should fix framerate issues.
For crashes, make sure all drivers are updated. Make sure your video card is supported (that Can You Run It? site is good for that). And if none of that works try a reinstall (but back up your save file)
Next time, before you throw out personal insults because you don't want to consider the possibility being on your end, do a little thinking. "went through some forums" isn't research. Especially when there are basic things out there that can 100% tell you if the issue is on your end. (in fact the controller issue was already discovered and is in the steam forums)
People who throw out personal insults when someone offers information are the close minded ones.
I remember there being a really easy fix for the side-step problem, but I have an X360 PC controller now. It's a shame the devs aren't going to patch the PC problems, but I'd say the game is 99.5% fine, and I really enjoy it.
I have the crash on the Rouge level, but meh. Lots of games crash. This is PC gaming, the benefits outweigh the effort of fixing the problems IMO. Otherwise, you could always get a console ;P
Indeed.... I'm running a few "fixes" myself. The side stepping I fixed with "joyToKey". The rouge level I simply left unplayed because I just CAN'T get through it. I read that not using homing jumps helps but still, even going as fast as possible I can't finish it before the game crashes. I'm no completitionist so I'm hopping I'll at least be able to beat the game w/out that challenge.
The one I'm still stuck with is the framerate. I tried on a couple of laptops and on my buddies monster I7 machine and it persists, both noticeable to the naked eye as well as Fraps benchmarks (which I personally don't trust ALL THAT MUCH, I trust my eyes much more).
I do enjoy the pricing and benefits of PC gaming (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you Steam sale!!! I'm on 15 games purchased and counting Oo), but accepting bad ports and carelessness from a company are two things I do not condone... dammit Sega, you keep screwing my fond memories of Sonic over and over :(
All the usual advice: make sure your drivers are up-to-date, and verify the game cache.
1. I have an Intel graphics card. Everything runs pretty well with the occasional lag, which I thought it was a GPU issue but everyone else (including the NVIDIA users) has having the same issue. The beginning of Modern Seaside Hill was a pain, but I think this time it was just my graphics card.
2. I use a keyboard and don't plan on using a controller. No comments on that.
3. I also got crashes every now and then, especially when I go on online mode and the aforementioned challenge on Seaside Hill (Rouge's mission). I also had problems with Crisis City. After collecting the first red ring on the slope (and after losing 29 lives), I decided to walk up the ramp instead of boosting. That's when the game got stuck -- nothing worked except for the timer.
Overall:
One might argue that SEGA actually thought of the PC market this time around. And they would be right. However, even if SEGA did make a port for the PC, they might as well have cleaned up the messes or at least patch it. I don't own the XBOX 360 version so I wouldn't know if they patched it or not. The only patch was a configuration menu makeover.
One might also argue that Sonic Team does care. Sonic Colors was based on Unleashed in terms of Daytime stages, but I would argue that the 2D platforming sections wasn't addressed.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the game and it is playable 90% of the time, but there are a few issues that they could (or should) have addressed.
At least this port was better than the port of Sonic 1 for the GameBoy Advance. That game was unplayable. The camera was focused on Sonic all the time, making it impossible to see what is ahead. The physics was utterly broken (surprise?), making any physics based puzzles pointless.
2. x360ce. Works wonders. I normally avoid controllers for PC games though, I ALWAYS have problems with them, no matter the publisher or developer.
3. No crashes for me (no more than any other stable game). Its not overheating, out of date drivers or anything else problemshootable is it?
^ Thats how I dealt with the bugs, don't take it as me saying they are acceptable, but I did get around them.
