How do you guys cope with this many bugs?! Oo
So, sorry for the rant but I'll try to make it meaningful. First a rundown of the issues that I found (and that from browsing the forum many others have as well).

1. Inconstant framerate (specially on Chemical Plant) for NO GOOD REASON. Game runs wonderfully but every now and then the framerate will drop to like 20 and stay there for a while. Oddly enough specially on the 2D sections... everything just looks clunky on a couple of levels (yey bad port! \o/).

2. Side stepping madness. Every now and then, for no good reason AT ALL Sonic will decide to go mad and start side stepping nonstop. Solutions include using third party software to "patch it", buying a new gamepad (since this game only likes MS x360 one) and/or uninstalling the game. ><

3. Crash. That's it... you'll be playing and then the game will simply freeze. Most notably on a challenge stage with Rouge but scattered around a couple of others as well (aside Rouge's level my game froze other 3 times).

...minor gripes with the game DO exist but they are overshadowed by the quality, this IS a good game. Only problem is that with 3 COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY GAME BREAKING bugs I just can't play it! Just CANNOT! The fact that this is an old game and these things are well documented makes it so they clearly DO NOT CARE. I shall never buy a single thing from SEGA ever again (ok... this is also because of the DMCA requests and all that debacle) and I encourage my friends to do so as well.

Generations has really poor DirectInput controllers support, since the XBox 360 controller doesn't have this issue, you can try using x360ce.

These could be due to computer settings as well. Not just the game settings. Find your power settings and if its on "Power Saver" turn it to "Balenced" if its on "Balenced" look at your graphics settings or just up the stakes a bit to "High Performence" This worked for me. If not I'm not sure what it is. Unless your running on Vista then I can't help you, sorry.

I don't have any of your listed problems. It might just be your setup not being up to par, as well as your controller not being fully supported.

I have a wired xbox360 controller that I use for PC gaming and it doesn't have issues on any games that I use it on.

I've went through some forums before I decided to settle for game side issues. I would never go ahead to post a rant about something I didn't fully research prior so instead of picking your narrow minded point of view and passing it as a fact I would advise you to take a step back and only participate in the discussion if you have something to add.

Well, for one, the controller thing is fact. Numerous people have been posting about it. Steam I guess just got it wrong with the listing full controller support. Controllers that aren't "natively supported" by PC have problems with this game (basically any controller that doesn't have a USB connection without a converter). Xbox360 controllers, Logitech PC controllers, even USB sega saturn controllers work fine. (I have a USB sega saturn controller that I use for fighters and it worked on this game)

As for inconsistent framerate and crashing, yes that IS something to do with your configuration. Either you have your settings too high for your computer to handle or you have driver issues. (Or, possibly but HIGHLY unlikely the game doesn't support your specific video card. But any card released in the last year should work fine. Even my old nvidia 8800gts ran the game fine before I upgraded)

Or, the least likely culprit but still possible, you somehow got a corrupted installation.

Possible fixes: If you turned off vsync, turn it back on. That should fix framerate issues.

For crashes, make sure all drivers are updated. Make sure your video card is supported (that Can You Run It? site is good for that). And if none of that works try a reinstall (but back up your save file)

Next time, before you throw out personal insults because you don't want to consider the possibility being on your end, do a little thinking. "went through some forums" isn't research. Especially when there are basic things out there that can 100% tell you if the issue is on your end. (in fact the controller issue was already discovered and is in the steam forums)

People who throw out personal insults when someone offers information are the close minded ones.

My biggest problem has been the switchable graphics card issue, but I fixed that. Now the framerate is smooth everywhere (rendering with a Radeon 6490M).

I remember there being a really easy fix for the side-step problem, but I have an X360 PC controller now. It's a shame the devs aren't going to patch the PC problems, but I'd say the game is 99.5% fine, and I really enjoy it.

I have the crash on the Rouge level, but meh. Lots of games crash. This is PC gaming, the benefits outweigh the effort of fixing the problems IMO. Otherwise, you could always get a console ;P

Indeed.... I'm running a few "fixes" myself. The side stepping I fixed with "joyToKey". The rouge level I simply left unplayed because I just CAN'T get through it. I read that not using homing jumps helps but still, even going as fast as possible I can't finish it before the game crashes. I'm no completitionist so I'm hopping I'll at least be able to beat the game w/out that challenge.

The one I'm still stuck with is the framerate. I tried on a couple of laptops and on my buddies monster I7 machine and it persists, both noticeable to the naked eye as well as Fraps benchmarks (which I personally don't trust ALL THAT MUCH, I trust my eyes much more).

I do enjoy the pricing and benefits of PC gaming (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you Steam sale!!! I'm on 15 games purchased and counting Oo), but accepting bad ports and carelessness from a company are two things I do not condone... dammit Sega, you keep screwing my fond memories of Sonic over and over :(

On the topic of controllers, does a wired Xbox 360 Controller work better than a wireless one with a receiver? I have a wireless one that I use with mine and I occasionally have the problem where I press A and Sonic doesn't jump. It's generally uncommon but sometimes it just ticks me off.

I have a even worse problem. The game doesn't even work without crashing. Running into an enemy? Ok, let's crash. Boosting? Crashing. Spindashing. Classic Crash. Attacking? More like crashing,

That sucks, Goldtex :(
All the usual advice: make sure your drivers are up-to-date, and verify the game cache.

1. Inconstant framerate

2. Side stepping madness.

3. Crash. That's it...

1. I have an Intel graphics card. Everything runs pretty well with the occasional lag, which I thought it was a GPU issue but everyone else (including the NVIDIA users) has having the same issue. The beginning of Modern Seaside Hill was a pain, but I think this time it was just my graphics card.

2. I use a keyboard and don't plan on using a controller. No comments on that.

3. I also got crashes every now and then, especially when I go on online mode and the aforementioned challenge on Seaside Hill (Rouge's mission). I also had problems with Crisis City. After collecting the first red ring on the slope (and after losing 29 lives), I decided to walk up the ramp instead of boosting. That's when the game got stuck -- nothing worked except for the timer.

Overall:

One might argue that SEGA actually thought of the PC market this time around. And they would be right. However, even if SEGA did make a port for the PC, they might as well have cleaned up the messes or at least patch it. I don't own the XBOX 360 version so I wouldn't know if they patched it or not. The only patch was a configuration menu makeover.

One might also argue that Sonic Team does care. Sonic Colors was based on Unleashed in terms of Daytime stages, but I would argue that the 2D platforming sections wasn't addressed.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the game and it is playable 90% of the time, but there are a few issues that they could (or should) have addressed.

At least this port was better than the port of Sonic 1 for the GameBoy Advance. That game was unplayable. The camera was focused on Sonic all the time, making it impossible to see what is ahead. The physics was utterly broken (surprise?), making any physics based puzzles pointless.

Only had it crash once, sometimes the controllers don't respond, or just outright go crazy with movement.

Turn off the steam overlay helps greatly but still some lag

1. Inconsistent framerate issue got solved for me by going into the options dialogue (through Steam, not in-game), and turning off the analytics tool. Also tweaked my laptop's power settings and processor speeds a bit, but that was for general framerate, not the inconsistencies.

2. x360ce. Works wonders. I normally avoid controllers for PC games though, I ALWAYS have problems with them, no matter the publisher or developer.

3. No crashes for me (no more than any other stable game). Its not overheating, out of date drivers or anything else problemshootable is it?

^ Thats how I dealt with the bugs, don't take it as me saying they are acceptable, but I did get around them.

Also Sega's more or less going under if they're not careful (I hope not though! Sonic + Phantasy Star are two of my favourite franchises), probably explaining their lack of support for many games.
