It seems on September 9th the game will be delisted, but will continue to remain available through the Steam bundle that contains all the Sonic games on the storefront.

Honestly, I'm not really satisfied with this outcome. The whole point of people's outcry was for the game to remain accessible for new fans so that they can experience the decade of mods the community has put out, and their response is to paywall it behind the most expensive option instead of just including it with purchases of the remaster. That's not exactly what I'd call "accessible". The only way it becomes affordable is if you're a super fan who's already got all or most of the games, which isn't going to be the new fans just now starting to get into the franchise.

Edit: They have clarified that they are making a new $60 USD bundle of legacy Sonic games in which they will be preserving access to the original Sonic Generations. Details here:

at least its still gonna be avaliable, and most mods will probably get ports to SxSG at some point.still sucks a little though.

It isn't being "delisted" it is being "unlisted" from store search as its own product similar to classic Skyrim. It gets removed from searching so people see the new one but its still available to buy if someone really wants it, this is the best compromise. It will still be fully accessible for anyone that really wants it.

For example you can try to search for the original Skyrim on Steam but won't be able to find it through Steam but it is still actually sold for those that want the original experience: https://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim/

I'd actually be fine with this, but the Twitter announcement says that it'll be available via bundles. Not sure if it'll still be sold on its own. I might be wrong though.

Yeah I'm aware of the twitter wording but I'm kind of hoping they're just saying that meaning you'll only be able to find it through the bundle but at the very least it will keep the game from becoming a rare steam key that goes for a hundred dollars.

The wording on Twitter is specifically that they are removing the game as a standalone title. The odds of it simply being unlisted but still purchasable standalone are very slim based on it, if existent at all. They make it very clear that their intention is for it to be purchasable via bundles on Steam and Xbox, not just findable through them.
This is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but at least an improvement over being totally cast into the void. Hopefully things end up like Mez Koo said so we can just link it in the discussions for SxSG for people interested in the original.

You know...that's acceptable to me. I was worried this was going to be a "scorched earth" kind of affair where it's just gone without warning. Sega actually took the time to explain what they're going to do and that the original version of the game will continue to exist for those who want it. I think as long as it's there and legally obtainable who am I to complain, it meets the requirement of keeping it alive.

Plus I think this will encourage more people to buy SxSG (it certainly met my metric) as well and maybe that game will get its own mods (I was reticent about missing out on the game because I didn't want to miss out on what mods people might make for it but I wanted to hold to my commitment that Sonic Generations needed to stay online to justify buying SxSG, and I think Sega has done enough to satisfy that).

I still would've preferred it if they included this version with purchases of the remastered one so that way people have a choice as to which one they want just from buying the new version so it doesn't compromise sales, but it's good to see there will still be a way for anyone interested to pick this up even after it gets de-listed on its own. :rarebutterfly:

It also shows to me that SEGA and/or Sonic Team are willing to take feedback into consideration and learn from their past mistakes. I did not expect this to be the outcome at all, but it's still better than what happened with Origins where there's just no option to obtain the originals in any form anymore.
Impressed they actually listened somewhat for once, though I honestly would have rather it be kept up as it's own separate thing and not have to spend $60 on it in a bundle.

Since Steam prorates bundles if you already own anything prior to purchasing it the only way this will hurt future players is if they somehow own no Sonic games on Steam but JUST want the original Sonic Generations.

I mean, only reason to buy the original over the new one is if you intend to mod it, which is a pretty good reason to, admittedly. I'll tell you this though, they better be damn sure this isn't a Sonic Colors Ultimate.

So it has been clarified that they are making a new bundle that totals to $60 USD if you don't own any of the games within it. That's definitely not as bad as I was expecting, but it's still a price bump for new fans who didn't already own any of the games in the bundle. I expect the price will drop pretty significantly during sales though, so definitely not the worst thing in the world.
