TL;DR I'm personally cautiously optimistic, but we really don't have enough to go on (only rumors at the moment) to make a definitive call this early on.
Any new content that could be added in the pointless remaster, will most likely just be modded into the original version.
I've heard that it's now been somewhat confirmed (still not officially) to be dubbed "Sonic x Shadow Generations" so unless we get Shadow The Hedgehog (2005 game) stages in the SG styles, anything this remaster can bring to the table is literally already in the OG game thanks to mods like the "Real Shadow Mod" or "Shadow Generations" and Shadow voice mods.
Or maybe port SA2, Heroes, and Shadow 2005 to all systems.
Instead of supposedly remastering a game that’s already on PC, and putting more Shadow things in it where they weren’t before
Agreed, there were better candidates for a remaster (a point which I've already harped on in other threads) and I sincerely doubt the shadow additions to S x SG (what I'm gonna abbreviate it to) are going to hold a candle to what mods for the current steam listing of SG have already accomplished.
Frankly, Heroes, Shadow 2005, Unleashed, or even 06 were more deserving of new releases than this game.
My best guess is that SEGA/Sonic Team wanted to play it safe and "remaster" (again, cautiously optimistic that they don't butcher one of sonic's best games when it releases and the original is inevitably delisted) one of their most well-received titles and just tack shadow onto it because he's basically the keys that SEGA can jingle to draw interest to a game. All of this to drum up hype for Sonic Movie 3 and get some good PR going.
I honestly predict that at best SxSG will get a "shadow story" that's just a modified version (albeit slightly compressed as shadow has little to no connection to the genesis games) of the original story putting shadow in the spotlight and slightly revamped stages (likely just minor additions to increase difficulty but nothing earth shattering). and at worse it'll just be a reskin for Modern Sonic and *maybe* a Classic Sonic reskin, which again, has already been accomplished by the fans via free mods. It's nice to imagine entirely new stages for Shadow's history like Radical Highway, Westopolis, White Acropolis, or Circus Park (insert 4th chaos emerald joke here) but I really just don't believe SEGA would go above & beyond like that.
But hey, if the game ends up being a masterpiece that largely improves on the original I'll be happy to have SEGA prove my cynicism wrong (though I probably still will complain about them cutting off access to the OG game's incredible modding scene).
Frontiers was a step away from that. And hopefully it’s good reception nails it in that they don’t have to focus on the same 3 zones every game to have something good. If anything, the reused zones for the cyberspace levels is the worst aspect
Frankly I'm glad that I was wrong though, just saw the trailer now and I'm hyped that they'll actually do shadow justice instead of just offering a reskin of Modern Sonic and calling it a day.
Glad that trailer happened.
Sonic X Shadow Generations looks so good, and i like the shadow part more.
And just seeing it shows its definitely not a Colors Ultimate situation.
We're safe.
