The Staturn version I had did not work for s.hit, probably because it was a buggy emulator; the sound quality was awful, the tracks and scenery barely appeared and the skyboxes were glitchy black HOM effects that looked like it was a pinball machine set on the edge of the universe.

If you can get it on an actual Saturn (if you have one) or at least a more reliable emulator (I forget which one I had), then that would be better.

I have the PC CD of Sonic R myself, but my laptop cannot run it currently because the processor is too fast, skipping tics so it doesn't read it properly.

The error it gives me is that I don't have enough memory or disk space to run the game, which is bulls.hit because I had plenty space when I tried to install it and probably still do, on top of my PC having 16GB of RAM.

There is a workaround to get it to run in a modern system but I don't understand the instructions and I don't want to risk breaking the game or my computer.

When I played it on school back then during Golden Time, I don't remember the PC version controls being that bad, though I think the steering was indeed a little wonky for Sonic at least.

I had great fun with it and wanted to relive those happy memories with my own personal copy I could play whenever I wanted, and not have to wait my turn. However, the problems I ran into with the game and my system are rather heartbreaking.

That's a main reason why I want Sonic R PC on Steam and/or GOG alongside the Shadow and 2006 remasterings; so they can be run with much less hassle.

That is the OS I have now; I was using either 10 or 8.1 when I tried to run Sonic R and ran into problems.

Anvil, is it version from 1998 or 2004? (if it's xplosiv edition, it's on 99% version from 2004). The later one is far less troublesome in working on modern systems (I've played on Windows 8 and didn't have any issues). There are some methods to make it work on newer systems, if you have any problems (http://www.play-old-pc-games.com/2013/04/09/sonic-r/).

Is it worth to buy? Well, that depends. It's not terrible, and you can turn off lyrics in music (quite important, because many people don't like it), so if you like experiments and can deal with control (using l/r brakes and Knuckles at the beginning is improving experience if you're playing for the first time)., you can give it a try. Keep in mind though that there are only 5 levels (probably one of the biggest lacks for Sonic R).

Mine is 1998 too. I knew about two ways to make it work, one being using CPU slowdown software, but I don't want to risk damaging the game and/or my PC. Nor do I know where any safe sources for such software exist.

I've now tried the DXWnd instructions on the Play Old Games site, but I have a different version of the one in the instructions: V2_03_82 build.

I've tried following those instructions as far as I can and it still doesn't seem to work right, even with the fan patch: the crash seems not to happen, but the game doesn't register my input; I can't select the Direct 3D option or highlight the other one so I'm forced to kill the process in the task manager or even sign out and back in.

Whoa, that would be a surprise, usually those older versions are far more expensive (especially boxed), since 2004/xplosiv version is very common (and far cheaper). I think that some photo/picture of it (if you can link it) would help to identify, which version is it.

These differences of DxWND version shouldn't make too much difference, I know that there is version far more comfortable to use (with slightly different interface), however the website I've downloaded it about two years ago doesn't have it anymore.

I've got to be honest, I had some brief contact with 1998 version in the past and it's very capricious, even with all stuff adviced on such websites as Play Old Games. The only thing worth effort in this version is the fact that it's only one working with patch allowing to play in network multiplayer (assuming that you have someone to play with :P)

Still, any way I can get the patched game, DX WND or not to detect my kuso keyboard?

Since the Play old games site has not been updated to accomadate the later DX WND versions, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
