Can't get the silver statue as Knuckles

I've reached the part where you have to take the gold and silver statues to the temple. I know where the silver statue is (that circle opening with the flashing golden ring above it) but no matter how many tims I dig, the statue isn't there. Any way around this bug?

I had the same problem yesterday, turned out I had already put the silver statue in the temple and forgot about it. Check to see if it's not the same case with you.
