What is this?

Any one who is familiar with later 3D Sonic games would know that all of them until Colours had some form of Hard Mode that you could unlock. Since SADX doesn't have a Hard Mode I decided to make one using the program SADXLVL by MainMemory. That's pretty much it, almost every level for every character has been re-done to be more difficult.

I made this MOD years ago and it's no longer compatible with the current version of Better SADX, I'm sure it's possible to make it compatible, but I wouldn't know how to do it. If someone wants to figure that out on their own, go for it, and while you're at it, fix the Emerald Coast whale section because it's stupid.

If for some reason you still really want to play this broken, unbalanced MOD there is a roundabout way of doing it.

Step 1: Make a copy of Sonic Adventure DX (yes the entire game) and put it somewhere else. This will be the Expert Mode version of the game.

Step 2: Copy the system files in the Expert MOD folder and paste them into the system files of your new copy and replace all of them. This will change all of the level object layouts.

Step 3: Rename the sonic expert.exe to sonic.exe, copy it and paste it into your new SADX copy folder to replace the old exe. This is for changes to level geometry and character start positions.

Step 4: If you already have the SADX Mod manager installed then that should have been copied along with the rest of the game. Open it, and disable SADX:FE and Dreamcast Conversion, since they overwrite the Expert MOD layouts.

Step 5: Save and Play.

Why was that even necessary?

BetterSADX replaces all wmv sound files with adx files, so if you already have BetterSADX installed, and play without it, you won't have any voices or music during the game. Also BetterSADX fixes other bugs like the camera bug when you stand still and lets you play in widescreen and higher resolutions.

If you have a totally clean SADX, untainted by fan mods like BetterSADX then Step 4 can be ignored.

Other Stuff

Just some other stuff to take note of:

• This mod was designed so that you could complete it from a new game, which was the intended way to play it.
  
• This mod was not designed with Emblems or Mission Mode in mind, if you want to go for 100% you can, but I'm pretty sure it's actually possible.
  
• Sonic's Ice Cap has under gone the least amount of changes as there aren't many level assets to work with, but also because the Limestone Cave section crashes whenever I try opening it in SADXLVL and the snow boarding section is largely unchanged since there is no penalty for taking damage, so apologies for that in advance.
  
• Knuckles' Emerald Pieces work 95% of the time, but the levels Red Mountain and Sky Deck have a few pieces that refuse to show up once I moved them from their original positions, if you do encounter these invisible pieces just quit and re-enter the level, restarting won't do anything.
  
• Finally I have no idea how alter boss fights if it's even possible, outside of removing rings. However there is one fight I was able to make some changes for but I won't spoil who.

I think this covers everything you need to know and I have play tested all these levels and they are possible to beat with no luck involved (although you may need to fiddle around with Free Camera Mode if Auto Camera is being uncooperative), so please take the time to figure things out in advance before claiming it's impossible, then again I might be overestimating the difficulty and some people might find it easy. As long as it's an enjoyable challenge, I guess that's all that really matters.

Only had time to get to Casinopolis today but I'm amazed how legit this is! Really brings me back to those days of playing the game for the first time and discovering the levels, which is quite a magical feeling honestly.

I am actually struggling to understand how to install this. In the mod loader I see the mod and I startup Sonic Expert but the mod itself is like not working it just botts up the normal emerald coast

Just made a big edit to the original post. Long story short, the mod isn't compatible with BetterSADX anymore so you'll have to do some dumb stuff to play it.

Getting this to work with the Mod Installer or BetterSADX is easy actually. Just create a mod for it like any other mod, and in the mod.ini file insert EXEFile=Expert Mode.exe

I'm fine if it's to make it as hard as the originals because SA1 is very easy
