You ever heard of the saying brain rot?
...but reviews averaging 48/100, all on a foreign console a decade after release with double the user score is quite absurd. This game was a staple Dreamcast title too... Everyone loved it when it released. Its like giving Ocarina Of Time a 48/100 cuz its clunky and aged.
Thats besides the point, go look yourself. Metacritic critic reviews do not mention that difference. Its all reviews made from Xbox 360 claiming "This game did not age well" "This game clunky"... Classic Retro dismissal, to treat it like it was made for the Xbox 360 when it was made for the Dreamcast with a DX port a few years later in what? 2002 for the Gamecube?
I don't know any other game that started as a top dog and had it's reputation go so downhill and so quickly. Diablo, Final Fantasy VII, etc, are still praised today, but not this one.
For me it's still the same banger.
SA1 is still fun though, yet not exactly the the best of platform games. The scores seem about right.
