A Problem With Big The Cat Levels
Who Was That Guy From Sonic Team That Got The BIG Idea Of Implementing A Fishing Game Mode When The Game Should Be About Speed???

the other characters all serve a simulair role in adventure and adventure 2
Padding
amy knuckles gamma and big the cat are much slower gameplay wise to pad out the game length
making a 3D sonic level takes a long time because sonic is meant to be fast
so to cut down on having to make a bazillion levels for just sonic the other characters were made so that the game length is still good
big the cat unfortunately is a bad example of it for an attempt to add something different

Its 4 levels that take less than an hour to complete total.

Its the equivalent of a minigame. Just know to press down to always hook the fish/frog. The frog is also always in the same location every time.

Its in the manual in the menu, but not many actually check it.

Big the Cat is definitely the only bad thing about SA1, which is otherwise practically the perfect Sonic game.

I thought it was fine. Was it a different pace? Sure. But the fishing mechanics are fine once you get used to them.

The real problem, as I see it, is the voice actor. Big the Cat has the most annoying voice in a game filled with annoying voices.

I have nothing to prove my point, but I tend to believe that implementing experimental fishing mechanics for a Sonic game kind of, sort of, made sense for the eastern audiences. Taking into the account the fact the people from Japan have a history of developing games that seem quite "???" for the "left" side of Earth, like Seaman and Ka (Mr. Mosquito)!

If anything, as a launch game, I think it was important for the devs to exploit Sonic Adventure as a mainline title that could demonstrate the various nuances of what the then-new Dreamcast console could be capable of doing, specially give how SEGA Saturn was more or less unsuccessful in comparison to its competition.

Maybe they were trying to warm the audiences up for Bass Fishing game? ;)

I agree with @Devsman, though. The process of mastering the art of getting bigger fish is what makes it worthwhile and entertaining. Even so, I concur that it totally anti-fun to guess whether or not the fish we're aiming for is >1999g, only to learn that it's a, say, 1998g fish, after spending a (relatively) long time fighting a silent battle against it. Some levels make it easier to complete the "A" missions than others. The key problem is the lack of sufficient cues to tell players that they're doing what it takes to finish the hardest missions. Losing a fish gives players the sensation that the game wasn't originally intended to be that hard/unfair, other than feeling motivated to try once more.

Big the cat was implanted in order to make promotion for the new sega game on dreamcast (SA1 was released end 98 near 99 and Bass fishing 99)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/71240/SEGA_Bass_Fishing/

People who will enjoy fishing part with Big will buy Bass Fishing at its release (back in the day) They used Sonic Adventure 1 Big the cart as an adds. :p

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
