Press the jump button in mid-air. (not the action button.)
Also get BetterSADX. (choose BetterSADX + Dreamcast Conversion in the BetterSADX installer because the Dreamcast version is the best version of the game.)

Your probably pressing the spindash button instead of the jump button

I just figured out that something is wrong with the control settings. I switched the controls around a bit and now sonic can homing attack... and knuckles cant dig. and if i use the controls the way they were before, knuckles cant jump after he gets the shovel claws (or whatever theyre called)

And also, I WAS pressing jump mid-air. not spindash. just to make that clear.

The 2004 PC version (which BetterSADX uses) is only better than the Steam port because of the GameGear games removed from the Steam/Console ports. However, the 2004 version is also the version which mods are made for, and one of the mods available is the Dreamcast Conversion mod, which restores the Dreamcast version's stuff. (this is why choosing BetterSADX + Dreamcast Conversion instead of BetterSADX (Standard) is a good idea.)

Antiviruses generally say that about any .exe you try to run.
Even official ones tend to set them off.

That's actually one of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle's problems: that when you try to run the game, often an antivirus will falsely read SA2's sonic2app.exe as a virus and delete it around time the Sega logo comes up, crashing the game and deleting it.

I've used BetterSADX myself, and can tell you it's safe.
You could actually install the files yourself, but it's much, much easier to use the BetterSADX's .exe to do the hard work for you.
And less chance of mistakes happening.
But again, antiviruses tend to panic and hate .exe files that aren't commercial.

Meh, im not putting mods on this game. even if they supposedly make it a better experience, i WANT to defeat the pain that is chaos 7 without the use of game modifiers (if it sounds like i mean cheats when i say game modifiers, that is not what i mean).

also, Ive figured out the issue. knuckles can jump, and dig. sonic can homing attack. i no longer need help, and just because i want to make this clear, i was, and am, pressing the jump button to homing attack, not the gosh darn action button.

thank you, and good morning.

Don't use BetterSADX. Use the Dreamcast Conversion installer. It's easier to use, has the same mods and is closer to the intended experience. The Steam version is a direct port of bad port (Xbox 360) of a bad port (PC) of a subpar port (GC) of a fantastic game. For reference, read this: https://dreamcastify.unreliable.network

Both BetterSADX and PkR's installer do the same thing, transforming the Steam port into the 2004 port.

BetterSADX is better for Steam users who use the Steam forums as the community is centered around Steam, while PkR's mod installer is better for users of the 2004 PC port and users who don't use the Steam forums.

you can literally uncheck all the mods when you select that second option upon pressing play in the steam library. also if you hate mods so much then why bother playing games on pc? better sadx also gives 16:9 widescreen, higher resolution support, true 60fps, and fixes tons of bugs in the steam version in addition to mods.

I never said I hated mods. I just meant that i didn't want to use them on this game.

Fair enough.

I personally only used BetterSADX out of curiosity (and because it restored the Game Gear games to it).

Although I made a point of NOT choosing the Dreamcast conversion mod, as I've never played the Dreamcast version.
I played the Gamecube version.
-------

Although word of warning: If you get The Sims 3 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords here on Steam... you definitely NEED mods for them.

(The biggest mods for them fix a LOT of bugs and glitches that can mess up both games royally)

With Sims 3, it's recommended to get the Nraas ErrorTrap and Overwatch mods at minimum (which can stop bugs that cause horrifying lag, and also helps keep your save file from being corrupted)

And with Star Wars KotOR 2, the TSLRCM mod (available on the Workshop) is HIGHLY recommended as it fixes no less than 500 glitches, and restores some content that got cut.
