Sonic Unleashed retcons Sonic Adventure?
I recently replayed Unleashed, and the game says that the Chaos emeralds are connected to Dark Gaia and The Gaia Temples, as opposed to Chaos and the Master Emerald Shrine as established in the Adventure games. They may be connected to both, but that's a big coincidence to me.

I'm not too sure. From my point of view, it could be a seperate continuity taking place in an entirely different universe not connected to the Adventure games. There's no sign of the master emerald or its shrine, no Station Square, the humans look completely different, no G.U.N. and not even any mention of previous events or anything.

And before anyone brings up Generations - remember that game came out after Unleashed - IMO Generations completely messed up the timelines for the modern era games.

Now that you say that, I get the feeling that Sonic Unleashed was essentially a soft reboot of the series and the developers didn't want the game to have too many connections to the previous games i.e. Shadow, 06.

Unleashed was, to put it lightly, a huge ripoff of Adventure in terms of story. Eggman finds some stone tablets, awakens a god of destruction, tutorial character is connected to monster of the week, emeralds lose their power and you recharge them, Eggman is betrayed by the monster, Sonic kills it with the emeralds. The story is a load of ♥♥♥♥ and the people who say it's "the best in the series" are probably just not familiar with Adventure's, or are familiar and just didn't realise the similarities due to the dated presentation, which is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

To be fair, the inclusion of Chip's friendship with Sonic does help to somewhat differentiate its story from Adventure 1. However I do still have to admit that it's a rehash at the end of the day, and Dark Gaia lacks a character arc unlike Chaos.

The Storylines of that Era basically consist of Eggman trying to use a ancient creature to dominate the world/build Eggmanland (he actually succeeds in Unleashed though) just to get betrayed by that and having Sonic defeat that with the Emeralds.
Look at SA1, SA2, Heroes, 06 and Unleashed and you'll see the similarities.

At least it actually tries something new with the story concept despite being somewhat derivative of Adventure's plot, with Sonic's friendship with Chip and globetrotting themes and doesn't try six different narratives into one bigger plot, rather just one story from beginning to end making it far less repetitive.

Come to think of it, Sonic Boom Ride of Lyric's plot was also just as derivative as Adventure's plot, with you gathering crystals to defeat an ancient monster that has been awakened, but much like Unleashed, is different enough to feel like its own self-contained story.

Its not. More like the emeralds have multiple roles to play. If anything, Angel Island should have been part of the Gaia Colossus. They reference Adventure a lot during Unleashed. The negative energy of the emeralds, a flight section with Tails, a Dreamcast in Eggman's hover vehicle.....

Probably unintentional, I remember Unleashed's story being pretty weak.

Mania retconned the entire serie and this is a good thing.

It's the truth tho. Generations split the timeline so that the Classic serie is the new main canon.

There are two main canons. Modern and Classic.

Youre forgetting that Forces is directly connected to Mania, and that Forces retcons dont make sense. So if anything, Mania isnt important until proven otherwise

Which I honestly don't mind too much in the case of Unleashed, because the story felt more like a player oriented experience as opposed to a character oriented story like previous games were.

Imagine a game where it feels like you're the one that is actually the character you're controlling instead of a game where you're just controlling a character on a screen. That's my experience with Unleashed as a whole, which is a bit hard to really explain properly and fully understand what I mean.

Unleashed is a roadtrip game. And it for sure has a better story and originality then every main game that released afterward.
