Do you get a Game Over if you run out of Continues?

I used my first continue on the Egg Viper battle. Now I'm low on lives and doing the side character story missions. Are there elimited continues? If not, what's the point of lives/continues at all? If they are limited, what happens when you run out?

You don't run out of continues, don't worry.

Also the continue screen is the Game Over screen.

Ok, thanks! What's the point of lives then, if you effectively have an infinite number of them? Or do continues restart at the level instead of at the checkpoint?

Nope, there's infinite continues. You restart the level at the start.

Back when this game first released (1998), most games still had continues even if it didn’t mean anything. Later games flat out remove continues, and the most recent games don’t have lives either.
