Cant change weapons on crew?

Ive got several crew members at LT or Commander level, but even though Ive researched multiple crew weapons, the picture for them in the "change weapon" bar remain kind of washed out and unselectable. Which means im stuck facing top tier aliens with laser pistols. What am I missing?

I thought you needed to be commander level (3) to change weapons.

I just checked my game and I also have one that's grayed out. It turns out I dont have that one researched at the workshop yet so that could be why your weapons are grayed out.

Im using it RIGHT NOW, i think I have it researched....

I'm sorry I can't help more. This game is great but still needs a lot of polishing so you might have run into a bug and as with most bug each person experience with them can vary.

Weapons that are available to the crew will appear on their profile when you talk to a clone, they'll all be greyed out until you click the 'Change Weapon' button just above the weapon icons. You can change their weapon when they have two stars on the back of their head (Lieutenant I think).
