Map LORE eastereggs?
one of my favorite parts of ToB and WARHAMMER 2 is the intricate campaign map design. The hidden nooks and crannies that the Devs took time to design... but some of the designs are ruins over well known areas(like an easter egg for history buffs?), and some have a small description to what that map marker is.

however I was wondering, if these areas (when unmarked) are just clutter they added, or if its an actual representation of a real ruined city/temple?
Specifically, you can find a SINGLE stone pillar in northern wales (south of Rudglann, West of ceaster). It is rather conspicuous, as it stand taller than your army and its flag... yet it has no mouse-over description. I have been trying to lure an enemy army here to see if the ruins would appear in a battlemap... To no avail.
I dont have quite the in depth knowledge of the locale... I know its not stonehenge. lol. Any ideas? I doubt a search for "ancient welsh battles" would narrow it down lol. you would have to have foreknowledge of the location. hence the "easteregg"??

Yes, there are easter eggs on the map, such as the Loch Ness serpent. Lol I would have prefaced with "spoiler alert," but news of that one traveled quick after release, Lusted even mentioned it in an interview a couple months back.

As for historical "eastereggs," they aren't really eastereggs imo, because they are conspicuous to spot on the map, things such as Stonehenge, or the Giant's Causeway. Some of the features are less well known in popular culture, but they are still iconic, and CA included them too, such as the Newgrange mound.

As for any lore to go along, there isn't any popups or something like that when you hover on features on the strat map, or fight near things such as Hadrian's Wall ruins on the battlemap.

There is, however, plenty of historical trivia to be found in the building browser, like the backstory to the Rock of Cashel, or the Dumbarton Rock, or cloister at Iona, for example. All of the Great Halls, Great Fortresses, Saintly Monasteries and Churches, and Saintly Relic sites have backstory which you can bring up in the building browser at any time.

PS: As for the specific feature you mentioned, there are many prominent standing stones or megaliths in Wales. There is a large one west of Chester that is the tallest of all the Welsh standing stones: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryn_Gwyn_stones

Maybe this is what you came across?

I appreciate the info! I consider myself a history buff, yet find myself quite ignorant to that of the british isles, save that which we all know, like the Norman conquest and such...
I read about those stones through the link... really sad farmers tore them up... goes to show you the plight of the common people, for them to tear up cultural landmarks in hopes of finding money...

Yeah it would be hard to call it a spoiler, since the landmarks have been around our civilization for a few thousand years now.... we've all had the time to learn about them. lol.

The specific stone I was speaking of, however, was not a "stone" per say, rather a large, Roman styled, round marble pillar, resembling that which would hold up the roof of any ancient Roman or Greek structures. it stand on its own, and it looks liek the top was knocked off.

I feel like I spend as much time in Total War games learning, as I do crushing my enemies. Its always a rewarding experience- but I couldnt find any specifics on this damn pillar and it looks deliberately placed on its own- as if a landmark to an ancient ruin of eras past... Obviously its Roman, but thats about all I can figure out.

There is a Dev somewhere laughing his ass off at my persistence... probably was jsut clutter placed on the map lol.

I started a new game as Northumbria, and I came across the stone you mentioned.

Yes, it definitely looks like a column, not a standing stone.

And it does seem to be Roman: if you zoom in, there seems to be Latin inscription on it, but unfortunately it's too small, and the texture too low res, for me to read it.

It looks to me like the type of column Romans erected on battlefields to commemorate a battle, for example there is a similar column at Cannae.

Either it's supposed to be something the Romans left behind, or something Romano-Britons left in imitation of Roman imperium, maybe even Offa left it?

I like the fact the Durdle Door, Maiden Castle and seemingly ‘Camelot’ Castle are all represented on the map (south West).

That is probably it. Would explain the Latin inscriptions, for one thing.

what an incredibly interesting wiki read....
archaeology and ancient histories excite me to the very bone. though its always a tragedy to find the evidences of our archaeology destroyed by people looking for wealth... over and over again people deface/unearth them looking for artifacts. and the "landowner" sold them.

the pillar, once erected, theoretically no longer exists in one point of time, but across all of history that it stands. it may see hundreds, or thousands of tennants and land owners who take care of it, and yet it only takes one greedy bastard to unearth it and its remains, probably justifying it by ownership, science, or also very common, destroying "evil" landmarks.

The inscription "out of the power of the Angles with his sword and with fire" was chilling.

A true testament to the nature of man we emulate with total war games. but to them it was real, a way of life.

We call it anarchy now, but imagine a world where everyone and everything around you is simply a conquest waiting to be happened. and your only true crime would be not living long enough to conquer it.
