Thrones of Brittania or Medieval II?
I've been thinking of getting a total war game but from what i've heard, ToB is not what it acclaims to be. I'd like to know, would it be worth more to get medieval II or ToB? Also, if this is the wrong place to ask this just tell me where else i can ask.

Thrones has newer mechanics (some better, some weird - all personal preference), but Medieval has a wider range of cultures since it's all of Europe and the Mediterranean. If you're fine with just playing on the British Isles, then Thrones might be the better choice. If you want to play as Muslims, Byzantines, or Continental Europeans...........then Medieval 2 is a better choice.

Thrones is actually rather good, it's just very focused on one point in time and space. Great if you want to deep dive into British geography.

Medieval 2 is ancient. If you have played any Total War since Shogun 2 it will seem horribly dated. If it is your first encounter with Total War it is great.
As for Thrones, I second what Geffairus said. It is good, but very focused. In August it will get a new free update to make it even better.

I'd say for a lot of people Med 2 will be a little dated. Thrones might be a little lacking in some areas but its solid mostly and i'm hoping it'll become more over time.

Medieval II Total War is widely considered the last, best Total War from the "Golden Age" of Total War (the Golden Age defined by me as being the series of Total Wars from the orginal developers and also tend to use a better in-game battle engine that more accurately depicts physics of war, clipping, and has many little things that add immersion such as stylized ruler and general portraits, general speaches, involved and layered mechanics, and many little things such as your men carrying ladders to the walls, and so many other things just dropped for in later Total Wars). Golden Age Total War games can be very deep and immersive. Unfortunately, Medieval II Total War UI feels very dated now, even to me, and as much as I love it I am often frustrated by it myself. There are some other options though.

If you are a strategy gamer, the game you really want it is Shogun II, Total War. It's the last game Creative Assembly made that still echos the better mechanics from the Golden Age of Total War, while still having a more modern interface, with timeless and stylized graphics. Mistakes were made, but it still plays very well even in 2018. It also has one of the best expansions of any Total War, Fall of the Samurai. The navel combat in both the base game and expansions are more fun than other Total Wars (mostly), and the cannons and guns are really suited to the Warscape (modern) Total War engine ...more so than other historical periods using the same engine.

If you are a very casual gamer, that likes their strategy very light, if a bit reptititve, then Thrones of Brittaina may be for you. Shogun II and earlier Total Wars are chess, and later Total Wars, especialy Thronws of Brittaina, are checkers. However, checkers is a more widely known and played game, and some people just prefer checkers over chess. Thrones of Brittaina does look very nice. Still, if it was my money I'd go for Total War, Attila, sincce it's based on the same engine, has a much bigger map, much more varied factions, including Rome in it's decline. Thrones of Brittaina is really, for all intents and puroses, a stande-alone expansion to Attila. Attila even has the Charlemange expansion as well, that feels a lot like Thrones of Brittaina, and offers a unique map to play on. Attila can be harder than Thrones, it's still a bit more towards chess than checkers. Personally, since I owned Attila, I refunded Thrones myself for this reason

If you want chess, but don't care for samurai or like the idea of Attila, you might consider getting Rome II, Total War, and then downloading the massive overhaul mod, Divide et Impera. This bsically makes Rome II, Total War into a totally new game. It also plays more like chess than checkers...so that's another option if that's your bent. Rome II benefits form som of the modernized UI innovations like 4K support. It's also still getting DLC, and has a ton already relased. It's unlikely Thrones will get anything other than the Blood DLC. As anotehr side note, if you do get Attila and the blood DLc for Attila, CA is on record for stating that you will then get the Blood DLC for Thrones for free, if/when you later decide to get that game.
