Sword vs Staff

So I wanted to go back to JE and I wanted to try out something new and go for staff this time. The problem is that staff seems to be worse in literally every aspect. Is there any point going Staff over Sword?

It could be kind of like using a character to instill challenge. Like Dark Souls. The game is only as hard as people say it is if you're a melee fighter. Same thing in Diablo. If you're a wizard Harry then you have a longer reach, but it doesn't do the same damage. You can fight more carelessly, but to a seasoned player, it seems like more work. That's my garbage answer. Only speculating.

staff is slower but more powerful attack "in general".

I use the staff on regular playthroughs, I like it because of the reach it provides. It helps with the beginning stages, especially with the bandits that consistently use staffs as well.

I have never tried the sword, but if the enemy has the same sword style, it beats the staff. Staff claims to have longer reach but I get out reached or overpowered by sword attacks every time. I don't see much of a range difference (vs sword), even though visually it looks like it. It has a initiative advantage rather, where the first strike technically hits first if both weapons start their sequence at the same time. But every time, the sword outpowers staff if they are hitting at the same time. I hardly see the benefit, even though I wanted to like the staff. Probably still stick with it for the challenge, but sword is stronger hitter.
