After playing for a while, the portals stopped being visible. If they were accessible, the white spots would come out from them and the shift option would come up, but any other indication that a portal was there disappeared. A few times during the level where the ghost chases you, i couldn't go through the portal even when i had the statue key. I had to reboot the game and then it worked.
