GAME CRASHING FIX
Hi folks,
if the game is crashing try below:

0. Reinstall the game

1. If you have Avast (or some other antivirus / firewall) it may collide with game engine and crash, turning it off will not help in most cases because it keeps the processes running in the background, I recommend uninstalling it (restart windows required) and if it doesn't help check next points.
2. Make sure the account have administrator rights and try to run the tihef.exe file in steamapps\common\Thief Simulator as administrator.

3. Try compatibility modes e.g. Windows 7 :
steamapps\common\Thief Simulator and right click on the .exe, selecting Properties from the menu. Select the Compatibility tab: Choose Windows 7 compatibility mode. Then run the game.

4. Check integrity of your game files on steam. If it's not 100% you need to remove local files and install the game again. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

5. In some cases MSI Afterburner causes a crash.

6. Reinstall directX

7. Uninstall Citrix Receiver or Citrix Workspace or Virtual Display drivers

8.

From what I understand there seems to be an issue between a resent win10 update and Nahimic v1 (audio system in msi motherboards). Disabling Nahimic or updating to v2 might fix potential launch issues and crashing in various games.

9.
If non of this topics crash fixes works you can also try this:

People with MSI issue - try flash update BIOS to latest for model, update OS' chipset (and other) drivers.

(use drivereasy, download them all, and just doubleclick the downloaded drivers rather than install each one by one if you don't want to pay - don't forget to make a restore point).

Get drivers from manufacturer if not hand-built PC/laptop.

Good evening, I have tried all the above mentioned manipulations and none works, each time I leave an area, the loading crashes.

You can't possibly be asking people to uninstall, a work tool required by many, to play this game. Two years and no patch to these issues. The game looks fun, but I don't think it's worth this much trouble.

I have actually uninstalled and then reinstalled Citrix Workspace - the game has been working fine ever since, and it hasn't impacted Citrix at all.

Why doesn't the game work with Citrix? I cannot delete this, the software is necessary for my job. Can you fix this?

We can't fix this, because it's not related with Thief Simulator

Hi!
I see a lot of people angry and/or in disbelieve that Citrix<->Unity could be the culprit(s) here...

to name a few.

I can sadly say that this IS the case for multiple games made with Unity. Look here, more of the same problems (and some temp workarounds):
- Paradox talking about this problem: https://support.paradoxplaza.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019138814-Citrix-Workspace-and-Unity-games
- reddit user in /r/citrix asks about this problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/Citrix/comments/gwtye9/question_on_citrix_causing_unity_crash_possible/
- citrix forum talking about this problem (with comment that Hollow Knight isn't working anymore: https://discussions.citrix.com/topic/409156-citirix-is-crashing-games-compiled-with-the-unity-game-engine/
- some more steam forums: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/3570700856112522196/
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/1743358239830363122/

It WASN'T something the game devs could fix as Unity is an engine they are using and it would be pretty hard for them to change engines. This was something Unity (or Citrix) should be fixing.

But.. as you can see I said "wasn't", this is because the problem was logged on the Unity forum here: https://forum.unity.com/threads/problem-with-citrix-workspace.589342/
and here: https://forum.unity.com/threads/solved-crash-when-running-any-unity-application.599953/
And there was a issuetracker made for the bug:
https://issuetracker.unity3d.com/issues/unity-2018-dot-2-7f1-windows-standalone-crash-on-first-run-due-to-unityplayer-dot-dll-access-violation?_ga=2.159185529.2110027076.1543255740-698773795.1529019021

Which states it is now FIXED. The devs need to move their project to a newer version of Unity with the fix and then create a new build (as stated in before mentioned Unity forum posts).

I took the liberty to look into the game files for this game and look for the Unity version that's used. I'm seeing that this game is using Unity build version 2017.2.1f1, the issuetracker states that the issue is fixed in the following versions: 2017.4.16f1, 2018.2.17f1, 2018.3.0b9 and 2019.1.0a6

So this:

Should be (as of the end of 2018) not true!
So please Noble Muffins, update your engine and make a new build of your game(s)!

And also, as a gamedev, if you ever find a bug in the engine you're using, for the love of all games and your customers, submit a bug report!

Well said. Thanks a lot for all your research and links. They're still selling this game so they should continue to support it. I just purchased this game and I think I'm going to request a refund. SMH.

@Peter, or whichever Dev can reply to this. I can play the game fine, runs good, etc. After playing anywhere between 10 mins and an hour or more, my game will CTD, with an error of "GetThreadContext failed". After I click ok, it gives me the "Thief Simulator needs to shutdown..." message. I've tried turning vsync off, verifying files in steam, etc. Still crashes
after a few. My temps are good, no issues there, etc. Do you need to see my crash and error logs? What's the best method to post those?

Update: Figured out the crashes had to do with Hardware-Virtualization in my Avast. No more crashes.

(p.s I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it didn't work and I am currently now trying some other methods)
