Just ignore it until you replace it with superior or exceptional armour. Or you can still craft a new one and replace it if it bothers you too much (it did bother me so I just made a new one).
It appears that I was wrong, armour are consumables, they absorb all damage so the companion doesn't take any damage to its health. Once the armour depletes, the companion's health is exposed and vulnerable to damage.
Only the health can be repaired, armour cannot, it just acts as a double health barrier for your mechanical friend.
Now we need a skill tree for the doggo =D
So we will burn resources on Crafting and Replacing any fully depleted Armor on the Pet.
Then again, sometimes it really thinks it is a dog, but more. Sometimes I see it using the rocket launcher or another weapon trying to dig a hole in the ground. I guess it makes sense. A dog's desires but done with the aid of technology.
Can't wait to see it hold up a convenience store at Rocket Launcher point for some dog treats. He he.
