Multiplayer?

I've just started I'm level 7, and working my way through the main quest line. Does anybody still play this online? Would probably be a lot of fun I imagine.

Yeah, pretty frequently you'll find an open game to join, but it might not be on the difficulty level you prefer.
You can host the game as invite only or open to the public if you want to control what the difficulty settings will be, and don't mind your missions and map locations being affected by whoever joins.

So if I open up my game and somebody who has lots of progress joins, will it update my map? What would it do to my missions? does this also happen if I join somebody's game?

The host's progress is responsible for available missions, safe houses, etc. But if someone joins and unlocks missions/locations while in your game, it'll stay that way afterward. If you join their game and they're way ahead, you shouldn't be working on the same missions that you are currently.

Just to add: be careful when joining others. I don't know how much tolerance you can give, but be sure to check the TEAM tab whenever someone joins (or you join others yourself). If they have all the skills at max, they are definitely hacking/cheating, and while this alone may not affect your game directly, some of them go as far as do one-hit everything, infinite ammo without reload (especially annoying when they use the launchers), and/or god mode and infinite stamina.
