Yeah, really annoying how a lot of things require wood and it's rare; when technically it shouldn't be.
Could be that the things needing wood to craft has to be a very exact wood. Collecting wood piles is a thing of the past.
Exactly what I said... trees everywhere, Crates, Pallets and whatnot all over the place, but only a few places to get wood scraps, and yeah, a few saplings or whatever that gives 1 unit of wood for each one collected. It is unnecessarily time-consuming to walk around collecting saplings; and what if you use those flares as a way of distracting the robots? Can't scrap what you need.
Agreed, add something to crafting, you need to adjust the levels of a few things.
In regards to the wood, if you are making an old-fashioned recurve bow (made of yew generally), or baseball bats (hickory); sure, a certain type of wood is better than others, but when building walls or watch towers and whatnot... any wood could be used.
I don't think "wood piles" (like on Fallout 76 etc) are the answer. The size of the pieces aren't realistic when building large objects. I think the oldie-but-goodie axe/felling trees might be better. At the least, be able to process fallen logs; so they don't have to create the animations/actions... just a "SCRAP" button over the logs and *POOF* 10-20 units of wood in one go.
As for wood, it become ridiculously easy to get by having a bow (Resistance weapon DLC)) with Ammo Pack.
a problem. In fact nearly all collactable resources are abundant, except cement and uranium, which are both tight to tasks.
Imho for the little bases you can build in the game its all rather easy to come by and plentiful.
they needed a key ressource to build things but for gameplay and balance reasons they made it rare they should have thought on another material or at least having for main ressource metalic scraps you get by killing the robots
