Fighting tanks...
So i battled the first big one at the church - it took me almost half of my ammo, half of my medpacks, half of my emp cells and i used up like 6 self revives ... So fighting just 2 of these and i need to start major lootgrind runs ... this cant be the way this is played.
So why the hell do i do no damage on the tanks parts?

If you can use them with a scope or binoculars to familiarize yourself with where the armored panels are on the legs and other areas. using AP ammo to shoot these off and expose the weak components underneath will help. Using EMPs to help line up clean shots at this areas is helpful, and once their exposed you can switch ammo to use FMJ, I believe grenades or explosive gas tanks/fuel cells are better to use after some of the armor is shot off to conserve ammo.
One strategy I use that should help with how much healing you're expending is to use hit-and-run tactics around places like the church or a barn. For instance, at a church, use the bell tower if you can see the tank from there, then go down to the ground and empty a magazine from a different angle. Then return to the tower or use an alternate door to attack from another approach. It takes a long time, but until you get higher level weapons, it's often very efficient resource-wise.
Everything also gets easier once you've gotten through most of the plot missions if you coop, where everyone can draw attention of the tank from different directions and take shots from good defensive positions.

Shot weapons/legs and it should die very quickly
It depends what kind of weapon you have, and how many ammos.
Later in the game, ammo won't be a problem and the weapon you use do much more damage.
You're actually at the very beginning of the game. Avoid these fights if you don't feel strong enough and continue the story and side missions to level up.
Lowering the difficilty helps a lot as they have less life and you'll get the same amount of xp.

Here the screenshot of Tank weakpoints.
Red circle = can be hit with Hollow Point or Soft Point
Yellow circle = need at least FMJ or AP rounds.

I knew some of this already, but wasnt able to put it to good use obviously^^
Still good info guys, thanks a bunch

I threw emps on the tank and tried putting a gas canister beneath it, but the game wouldnt let me (red marker), so either i was unlucky with the terrain or one is not allowed to place those near a tank

I think the game prevents placing objects near tanks. Even near destroyed ones. I figured this when I was trying to rebuild a destroyed trap at my base. The game would not let me, because the remains of a destroyed tank were in this area. There was no problem placing stuff underneath destroyed runners or hunters. Just an observation. Does not mean it is always like that.
