There are no servers for Generation Zero, it uses Peer 2 peer matchmaking meaning whoever hosts a session acts as the server. This means that once we decide to stop development on GZ, you'll still be able to play it, even with friends. The only things you would lose access to at that time are Apex Connect related features like Assignments.
That being said, there are no plans for stopping development at this time. The review you read was about the halted development of Second Extinction, posted as a reviewbomb here.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply.

The actual playing of genz multiplayer session is peer-tp-peer but a sever needs to be active for it to be accessible. Just like Second Extinction and I quote:
Second Extinction will be removed from sale on storefronts but the game servers will remain active for the time being, allowing everyone who purchased Second Extinction to continue playing solo or with friends. We will eventually take the servers down later next year, but we’ll communicate this well in advance once we have more information.

So are they shutting down servers for both games, or just SE? I'm confused now. I won't buy anything else from these devs if they're gonna do us dirty like this.

1) Generation Zero can be played without internet connection.
2) Gen Zero is fully released game, not early access.
3) SR_Carni is Community Manager of this game working along with the dev and actively streaming(youtube, twitch & Steam stream) every 2 weeks talking about the game & news, also the owner of Gen Zero tag along with his stream.

Even worst games with no players for years still have functional P2P multiplayer, there are youtubers making content about those.

I don't know where you get the lingering idea that genz is closing.

@Velmoria. As for playing solo without a server, internet nor Steam yes pirates have been doing that as well for decades for many games.

It's comparison with Second Extinction that require online connectivity to even get into main menu.

I don't own SE but I think I have seen pirate version of it which can be played solo as well.

Well I only want to be able to play with others. I don't care for random connection to a server. If I can play p2p with others in co-op that we can invite each other, that's all that matters to me. Thanks for all the info everyone.
Very interesting development since some of the points being discussed are good selling points and forward statement. Let's ask the the one quoted.

Attention carni;

If, let me repeat, If Genz is no longer being updated, pulled off from Steam store (or any store) and any semblance of server support removed, can owners of Generations Zero:

1. Still play the game solo? Multiplayer? Online? Offline? For a while or for many years after?
2. What are needed for owners of Generation Zero to be discoverable by other players while playing online?
3. What are needed for friends to invite one another to join his\her world?

I think this should be enough.

I've seen quite a few people directly claim that GZ is shutting down, in various places on the internet. I think it's just disgruntled or nasty people spreading FUD to get GZ players upset or ... I don't know, I'm not a psychopath so I don't understand this behavior.

Just disconnect your computer from the internet and you can still play Gen Zero.

I would guess that you would treat Gen Zero like a game you bought from another web site that was not Steam. Then through steam, continue to play co-op if Systemic Reaction no longer supported Gen Zero.

The problem I have had with older games, bought from sites other than steam that the sites were sold to another company, Steam bought one of those companies. Had to register the games via the new company to continue to play them. Example would be the old COD games. It was a pain to log into the games every time I wanted to play them so ended up buying them off steam.

My old EA games bought before EA went behind a monthly pay wall to play them, you still had to log into their website to even play solo. But the games started out that way.

Are you saying that if Genzero goes the way of SE (eventually no server and pulled off the Steam store) that those who bought the Genzero from Steam can still play the game on multiplayer on Steam as usual?

EDIT: I did not remove the quote from SeaSniper

I would like to open a thread about carni's quote and your interpretation, I hope you don't mind.
