NOTE: Homing turret takes a lot of weight but it's your best combat-buddy in any situation. I normally use it as my rear-guard since its firing range is around 232 meters and you can move away from it at max of around 340-350 before it despawn. It will despawn after 60 seconds of combat whether it was fired at or not.
When I play with friends, we sometimes use something to make the auto-despawn about 4 times longer.
Last week we wanted to lure a reaper near a church safehouse but the damn thing is about a kilometer away. We could not immediately deploy the Homing Turrets with its 60-second auto-despawn as it will despawn before we could lure the thing.
Defending on your preference you can deploy as many turrets you have, but it is really overpowered, especially at longer duration. In our reaper scenario we deployed only one mainly to take care of the reaper's hunter and runner bodyguards.
For base attack and defense the homing turret is a winner.
The Homing turret is the most fun weapon in the game. Just like CrazyWolf, the Homing Turret made it possible to have like a rearguard or an overwatch (the fifth member of the team) during multiplayer.
The devs hit the jackpot in the Homing Turret and not really for its OP but the fun it provided -- so devs take note fun sells.
Also, even if the devs did not think about it, the Homing Turrets added the element of having an effective-enough rearguard or overwatch support, which carbinth called "the fifth member of the team". Sadly these new combat elements can only be made effectively doable and fun with an extended auto-despawn time.
As I only play SP, the turrets sounded a good idea for extra help, but I didn't know they de-spawned as they do. They sounded a good idea but not worth the hassle so I won't bother with the dlc's.
Equipment Pack 1 auto-despawn portable MGs after 60 seconds in combat, whether it got damaged or not. Equipment Pack 2 Homing Turret will also auto-despawn after 60 seconds., sure those are valid reasons not to buy.
I got a few of the dlc's including base support and defence packs plus some of the weapons too and they are what I wanted, better stopping power for my base defences and some nice weapon additions.
