There is a learning curve and learning how to deal with machines (running away is always a good option) with weak weapons till you start getting better weapons and skills. There is an interesting story and lore. You can avoid the machines, which is best to do when starting out. enjoy the adventure and the landscape. If it's cheap you waste a little of your time and a few bucks.
Most of the issues do seem to be related mostly to synchronization during Co-Op play, or when talking to their servers for the special Missions you get when online playing Co-Op.
Also, after Updates, there are often problems. This usually is with older saves. Sometimes also people forget to update the installations to remove Mods before an update.
Still, there are issues almost every major update. You may find it takes 3-5 weeks, on average, for a fix to that update.
I usually will back up my saves consistently to a different folder. If you go to pcgamingwiki.com and look for Gen Zero, it will tell you where you can find your saves and a method to back them up. Many have posted how to do that before, even I have. There are guides for it if you look at the Guides tab just above this actual thread at the top of the Steam GUI, you should be able to find a Guide that explains it, if not 3 or 4 of them.
On Sale, for Offline play, it is a rather unique experience and a good value. But, I don't have issues with my graphics card and the game. I don't play online. I back up my saves. I don't play the current campaign during the first few days of a new update. I archive it before I update Gen Zero on Steam, all updates are on paused until I click Update. I will play a new campaign instead, which means I manually swap saves and other info in and out. I do this a lot, and am comfortable with doing it.
Doing other than this, your mileage may vary. For me it is a very beautiful game. Camouflage is amazing in this game. It is very hard to find a wreck of a machine in the grass, for example. No matter what color is its camo, this game has the best camo of enemies anywhere that I have played. But then, that can make it annoying to even find and pick up loot. And looting cursor is oddball and unpredictable, sometimes acting like a pixel hunt just to get the true search icon to come up. That's irritating, and constantly so.
Otherwise, it can be a good value. But some hate it. As to its "legs", it is not clear how much more Systemic Reaction will develop and add to it. I'd presume up to the end of the year, and maybe 1 clear major update. The rest will depend on many other things, and is much more unlikely.
Something I'd suggest is to set the key to interact/loot as being a press rather than a hold, personal preference but there's a lot of box rummaging in the game and having to hold the key gets tedious and doesn't particularly add to a feeling of risk or threat.
I just want to say the bugs are not few and not only affecting few players but most are just annoying and irritating piece of s**t and not game breaking. Several times already, a game update which was suppose to include the fixing of bugs, actually introduced game breaking bugs or recycled old previously resolved bugs.
Is it fun or challenging to play? Of course.
EDIT:
I am convinced the devs themselves do not put enough care about this game and their players. A moderator here once said that this game is "a labor of love" for them and I was hoping the claim will be verifiable by their treatment of the game but no.
