Differences between FMJ and AP ammunition?
The title says it all, what is the difference between using FMJ and AP ammunition? I know the real life difference, but I am not sure I see much difference in the game.

In short, FMJ does better all-round damage, decent against armor but good against components. AP ammunition does ~25% less damage to components I believe, around that range, but does more damage against armor plating.

This is purely speculative, but AP might have more penetrative capabilities against machines as well, because AP feels like it does better against targets like hunters, where they’re thin enough and have the good components in the back. But the ballistics in this game are not all available with accurate description, so it is hard to tell and hard to test.

For hollow-point/soft-point to add as well, it is even stronger than FMJ against components, but even less effective against armor. Usually, you want SP/HP (if available)> FMJ > AP, since components are what you want to hit primarily, so you want to aim the more armor-penetrative shell when what you’re targeting is behind armor plating and metal (not exposed).

You will notice the difference in the bigger machines more than the littler ones. Shoot AP rounds at a tank it takes several more rounds than if you use FMJ rounds but opposite on harvesters. They take more FMJ rounds than AP rounds. And that is hitting them in the same places with each. But on smaller machines and close range then most effective rounds will be AP in the SMGs and LMGs. Assault rifles will be a mix of FMJ and AP and distance from target and which rifle.

Does different ammo have different damage changes/drop off? It was one of the things I been wanting to know most, but I couldn’t find an answer on it.

I have been wondering about velocity myself and I tried to test it. So far I think the only thing that counts for that is the barrel extension. But take that with a grain of gunpowder, it's just my personal testing and experience.
