The mods are updated, although there is practically only one modder left who is still modding the game as everyone else have moved on to modding other games.
Most mods, trainers, cheats or edited files, have a disclaimer, just like Steam and System Reactions, that you use their property as is and as intended and you have to agree to it before you can download those files. Most of those 3rd party files also state it is NOT intended for multi-player, online play, but solo play. What you do with what you have on your own computer is your business and if your friends want to play with you and your trainers, then keep it private please. Hopefully you let your friends know that you are using 3rd party files but do you respect others and let them know of your use of 3rd party files when you join public co-op?
But, keep in mind if those downloaded files you installed on YOUR game can cause corrupt files and ruin your game, you risk others also getting their game corrupted by you jumping into a public co-op game with players unaware of your use of those trainers, they did not get a chance to agree to your use or the risk of introduction into their game of those 3rd party files. (Apex engine is proprietary property, unlike a lot of game engines that can be modified publicly with owner's consent. Does mod programmers know what is different about the Apex engine verses others)
What part of the few bits edited from a 3rd party file are introduced into the other player's files? Why, after an update, does most all the mod users crash when they try to start their game but a lot of other players, that never installed mods on their game, also are crashing or lose progress in their game and start over with a fresh install?
And I said I didn't want to open that can of worms
Even without mods this game will tend to crash, or are you implying mods are to blame for the crash. If ever a mod caused damage to the save file it is because you did not follow the instruction and now complain here about mod breaking your save. Wait, are you just parroting what you read somewhere?
I think you used an extremely old mod when the game changed its its inventory system upgradable to 4-5 levels. Actually, your corrupt save is fixable.
Again, for anyone using mods, remember that they need to be upgraded when the game makes an update to maintain compatibility.
Never think that mods last forever even after a game update.
