Also, it is my understanding that if you quit out to the main menu and change characters, gear you've dropped on the ground will still be there. It is only after you've left the area too long, or shut the game down entirely, that such things are lost.
I once accidentally dropped my 5-Crown sidearm while in a fight at the airfield, the east side just north of the safe house. Over the next 45 minutes, I fought my way down the strip, killing 2 tanks, a harvester, and a small army of hunters. Once I realized what had happened, I retraced my steps and eventually found a lone backpack sitting int he middle of the floor of one of the green shacks. It had about 20 units of scrap metal and wood I had dropped to save weight, and my pistol with attachments that I also somehow accidentally dropped. It was still there, almost an hour later, and having traveled almost a kilometre away.
All things considered, the game is fairly generous with how it handles despawning corpses and items.
