I have used one and I can assure you, it protects you from gas.
Almost half of our group had to run out and throw up, or just gave up.
The rest of us sat the full time out, but hey sure sucked against teargas.. and the gasses in this game seems quite a bit more dangerous.
The only place I think it's a bit too much, is the gas in 'Hermelinen' that seems to be 2 or 3 times stronger(?)
Having armor for +10% gas and Chemist skill, almost seem to make it worse? Not sure about that one, as I've only tried one bunker with and without the chemist skill on the same char, with the same mask.
But their protection value as you see isn't even past the 50% mark. The other clothing have the same marking for the skill/protection, and using 2 of them don't give you 100% immunity, even with skills in it already.
So currently it works 'as shown on it's protection value', and don't seem to stack with skills. I'm pretty sure I died in 'Hermelinen', but it might've been from a tick attack in the middle of it. so they serve at least some purpose, other then to clog your vision, if they stop at 18, and if the room is clear from enemies.
And the Swedish gas-masks did suck at that time!
If you want to complain about unrealism, talk about bandages that heal being poisoned, or asleep, or in coma, whatever that gas was supposed to be doing.
Last stream I think they more or less fully confirmed the mask not working 'as intended' in the game. Guess they can fix it by just buffing it up, and also do it visually on the protection notches.
I wouldn't complain is that is done.
I guess they just didn't serve in the Swedish army/navy at the right time, to be the right judges of how it really worked
I have used gas masks few times and they don't leek in if used and maintained properly.
There is no 70% protection from gas masks. It is 100% or 0% .
If game wants to simulate gasses that go trough your skin etc. , game should offer proper gear for them then. Heck, you can make nice suit from normal clothing if you make 30 seconds trip to gas zone.
So yes, way gas mask is in this game is just stupid.
Gas masks need filters that are effective against whatever you are gassed with, the ones meant to stop tear gas are probably not going to do much against anything actually poisonous.
But you will still be breathing trough a filter, so if it manages to stop even a small percentage of the gas it is still better than no filter at all. Some poison gases can even be blocked by a wet towel, though I doubt those are actually used for chemical warfare these days.
ANYWAYS! The masks have been fixed in the update so they actually work, and rumor has it that all you really need to do when encountering gas is shoot the canisters spewing it and it should stop. I'm off to test that now.
