Fox Pelt Problem
How do I buy red foxes with pelts that are not just plain red??

Indeed the color variants are a random genetic factor among all animals of a species. While it seems that the variants are inherited they seem more random. So breeding color variants gives less chances than expected that the offspring will have a color variant.
But patience and diligence will usually come through in finding one in the trade center in both franchise and sandbox.
