Disable grid to make items move freely - or something like it?

So, I'm actually taking my time to actually build the zoo from scratch. But it's very annoying that you can't place items freely.. I mean, you probably can, but if that's the case I cannot figure out how to do so.
I tried CTRL to no avail...
Anyone knows a trick to stop items from snapping to the grid? It does not look very nice when the walls are visible through the roof :))

There is an option to change the size of the grid in the bottom right corner of the screen, when you have a grided piece selected. Also holding shift allows you to move the piece up and down on the grid. If the piece is part of a building you can select the building, click on the litle pencil icon to split the piece off and move it freely on its own. I am still learning but I hope this helps a bit.

The other way to do it, as well as changing the snap height on wall pieces, is to use the non grid walls coverings. These look exactly like the wall pieces but they are not grid items. Just watch out though because they do not work as hard shelter.

Press X for totally freeform rotation and movement options. You might also look at the lower right panel for things like barriers. There are controls in there for disabling/enabling things like snap fit; angle changes; if the barrier keeps the top straight or if it rises and falls relative to terrain etc.....
