In that time there has been a dramatic decline in bird species.
The reason being is twofold:
Cost: some species require heated tropical environments and therefore won’t be outside. The heating is very expensive today. Plus we have avian bird flu ever present which can and will decimate a caged flock and they do not have the facilities to house and separate individual birds.
Endangered list: This is primarily the main reason.
Zoo’s are about conservation. No longer are they the old fashioned Victorian visitor attraction with Elephants,Lions,Tigers,Giraffes behind bars.
Due to man’s destruction of the planet and habitats like the Amazon jungle being destroyed,
So unless birds and animals are on a ‘Red List’. They no longer accommodate them.
They will try and get animals on the Red List to breed or share with other zoos to increase populations to the point of releasing into the wild - sometimes controlled zones and parks
But it would be cool to see some birds that fly a little more, some of the predators, owls and things would be nice and the more famous tropical birds would attract players I believe.
Or even a selection of a few species the way we have butterflies.
