'Unable to have mates as a beta animal'

So, I have 3 prairie dogs in a zoo, 2 females and 1 male. It says both females can have mates but not the male. He is the only male so it doesn't make sense that he is a beta. Please tell me if there's anything I need to do.

Send them to the trade centre and return them, that should force the game to re-evaluate their statuses. Sometimes it borks up alpha/beta status and can take a while to remember what it's supposed to be doing.
