If in sandbox, Are you certain you saved before exiting the game?
more then 3500 hours of playin franchise and never experienced such bug... it seem like a absolute nonsense... franchise is able save even newborn animals during crash before autosave/manual save etc.
Did the sort of uncommon thing of loading back into the main menu from a franchise zoo, and back, and got 47 education board error notifications. Couple seconds later a notification that vet research had halted because there was no such species present.
Looks like multiple species were just randomly gone. I immediately killed the game through task manager, and loaded back up. Looks like everything's back and there's no lasting damage.
