King Penguin as an example
Hi

Can someone please tell me any tips for ensuring how to make sure that the best stat baby producing pair mate together when you are dealing with animals that need multiple animals to be happy and they are monogamous.

So king penguin as example, needs a big group but need multiple males and females as all paid off.

Thank you :)

In this example, it is best to place an equal number of males and females in your zoo and wait to see who wants to pair up with whom. Ensure complete research and give the animals the best possible care. Over time, keep some singles aside to place after a death and trade them after about ten years to prevent overpopulation.

You can select your ideal couples, then put the first one in the habitat, after the first successful mating the second one and so on…the social group doesn t affect so much the whole welfare; or you can do the same thing but using contraceptives.
But with penguins, flamingos and cranes, if you start with good genetic animals, you just have to sell the cubs with bad genetic and keep in the habitat the other ones, then let them mate.

In addiction, on steam guide there is this very good guide about genetics and mating, maybe it can help you, here is the link https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2269668667

Thank you both very much, I always try to go for good genetics yes but good genetic pair does not seem to always produc good genetic babies so yea I really just want to try to control as much as possible who pairs with who.

So marcello, what you said about introducing two at a time, you mean that once they are paired up they will stay that way and i can then introduce the next pair and so on?

Great, thanks so much. Might take abit more work but probably worth it :)

It can be tricky with large group animals to get the best offspring. Be aware that often two very high rated animals might not produce as many high rated offspring as a pair of medium to high rated animals.
The best tool we have for predicting the best mates is to use the compare mates tool to select animals that should produce better offspring. Know that it shows the chances of breeding and the size of the indicators show the range of what to expect.

Yea thanks, I always use the compare tool, just didnt know how to get the pairs to pair up how i wanted when in a group, but do now :)

I have abandoned that other way of forming couples, so first a couple and then another and so on, because it is time-consuming and they are not as monogamous as it appears. I don't know whether this applies to all species of penguins, but I have tried to name the South African species as such after pairing. So for example Pete and Judy paired up and got a chick named Oscar. I then named that animal Oscar Pete Judy. When I later looked at the family tree, it turned out that either Pete or Judy had looked a bit further than their own nest. Since then I have formed such a colony as I previously described.

If we want to be exacting as to breeding it's often better to create a breeding pen or pens, in terms of a strategy that works for all species. Contraceptives are a good option for herd or flock type species but the breeding slows way down. When doing the breeding pens it's often wise to set up pens for the male and the female offspring to keep undesired breeding from occurring.
