Also, same thing downwards. You'd be shocked how often burying your fences a tiny bit can really help you avoid escapees.
And the barriers follow the lumps and bumps, filling in the gaps from the ground upwards. There's no need to bury them. If that was necessary you would have to do it to stop the burrowing creatures escaping!
