edit:im not sure if the gens matter in this
There seems to actually be no rhyme or reason to the stars. It says the stars are gained via treating the animal well, it having good genetics and it living a long time. Yet I've had animals which are basic, no rating (no bronze, silver etc) genetic wise getting 5* yet gold ratings, doing exactly the same stuff, not getting it. It's really annoying as the final mission requires you to have 6 animals at the same time with 5*. I had one, it suddenly stopped. No idea what caused it to go away. We'll see.
I dunno what to do. I look after the animals, they're always above 90% welfare, they just don't go up in rating. I guess better animals do but affording 2,000 odd for a single gold bengal tiger is a lot and I've not gotten that much yet in the final mission. I don't think I'll ever save up enough to get that. On top of that, final mission requires above 80% happiness with X amount of visitors. Can I do that? Nope. Was perfect until I hit marketing to get more people in and it plummeted from 90% to 76%. I'm really annoyed as I want to finish that gold.
It is depressing as it's not like i can just go afk. You lose money if you don't have animals and if you have animals you gotta manage the populations and so on. All I can do is close the zoo and restart.
The guest one, if you haven't gotten that yet, is actually pretty easy. I hit the target number of guests before I even reached the gold tier, so got credit for that immidiately. Then I closed the zoo long enough to empty it out, let my staff get things in tip top shape, and when I re-opened the happiness goal was hit within minutes. See...you don't need to hit both of those milestones at the same time. ;)
Edit: got a 4th but couldn't put it into a trade centre for some reason, so it died.
I just got my research to where all 20 species in the zoo are to 100% enrichment and eating food of at least quality 2 if not 3, so I figure the current generation being born is going to be good for getting more 5-stars (Just need 3 more).
I have always kept my animals in breeding pairs anyway, since the very first zoo, and am at 2nd or 3rd gen for most of the animals except the 5 newest ones....so I like my chances.
Thanks for sharing your experience as well, helping me feel like I'm on the right path.
