I mention this because IRL hippos are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, yet they do fine in our zoos. ;)
And yes, eventually a 4x4 safari ride will go through elephants and lions (in separate habitats)
There are some preferable co-habitants for all species - just check the zoopedia. As far as I remember, the African Elephants have no preferred species, but the Asian ones do perfect with long-nosed apes and malayan tapirs. But get ready to set several zoo-keepers up because they have a ton of poop to take care of... (same with savanna habitats if you put some of the suiting animals together)
In general herbivores do not mix well with carnivores.
Someone who understands my life. :D
Two habitats - what stops animals walking through null barriers?
