Is franchise mode still just puppy farming for points?
I remember when I last played (at release) the franchise mode was just making some enclosures with turtles and easy animals and then just breed breed breed and sell. All the good animals where crazy expensive as well. Made me quit franchise and just go sandbox.

You can actually do whatever you want in Franchise mode, nobody will appear behind you to force you on anything.

Franchise hasn't changed all so if that's the way you remember it I think you will find it to be the same.

Franchise can be very slow when one first starts out. but one does get more funds rather quickly. Conservation credits are a bit more difficult. Finding good stock at low prices then breeding and trading can be a very tedious thing. But When one finally gets to the big Attraction animals we start dealing in bigger credit turnover. So it would seem to get better as you play and get more savvy on which animals can reproduce quickly and sell for good credits. But it is still a constant grind. Sometimes I think I'm only playing franchise to unlock all the zoopedia and species goals.

It's just how you look at it. I love to play in franchise; start gently and gradually expand to the zoo you envision.
Sometimes a loan is needed and maybe another, who knows. It gives me a good feeling to see the end result after about 50 in-game years. The zoo is - in my case - manageable in terms of +/- 10 animal species and number of visitors. At that moment I have all animals that are suitable for the land, biotope and in the right condition. Personally, I trade to defaults, so anyone can access it. And yes, that means that if you want to get results quickly, you have to put down big money or green leaves.
I'll move on to the next franchise when I've replenished my buffer of leaves.

What do you mean by move on to the next franchise? Like just create a new zoo?

Yeah, In franchise you can have multiple zoos that share credits. And you can move animals from one zoo to another using the trade center. It's one of the nice things about franchise.
