Use x (short cut key for advanced placement) lower until the gate path has curbs/is flat with terrain. If the blueprint turns red you may be to close to existing paths and terrsin can't modify within the blueprint correctly. Scoot away from them. If it's still red you may need to nudge up a little. X brings up 3 direction arrows. Up/down. Left/right. Forward/ back.

I also highly recommend playing the career mode. This teaches some needed skills for the game, but not all.

You should also always read the instructions the developer of the workshop item gives with the blueprint.
And, as mathletee said, play the career mode first to learn the basics of the game.
We've all been there, believe me lol

One of those arrows should lower. Usually green unless you've rotated the item into a different orientation that it's original one.

When you hold shift you can lower it up and down. Select the habitat, hold the Shift key, and you don't see arrows, but just move your mouse up and down and it will raise and lower the habitat. Also, I've found that sometimes just to be more creative, when I place the habitat away from any paths, I can hold that shift key and raise or lower it to some distance from the flat land and then place it there. Then, you can use terrain tools to spread out the land from the edges of the habitat, till it's fat enough to place a path around, and a ramp or stairs if necessary to get to it, and you've got a habitat on a hill or in a valley/crater.
