Just how inbred is "inbred"?
Okay okay, now before I start making Crusader Kings jokes... seriously here...
Just how genetically separate do two animals have to be NOT to get the inbreeding penalty?

Assuming that parent+child and full sibling pairings are both obviously inbreeding... what about the following?

First Cousins (One or both parents are siblings)
Half-Sibling pairing
Uncle + Niece or Aunt + Nephew
Second Cousins (sharing at least one grandparent)

Or to put it another way, what is the absolute minimum genetic distance I can make between potential pairings to avoid the inbreeding penalty? Obviously the greater the distance, the greater the number of Red Panda habitats I'm going to have to make, the greater number of new Red Pandas I'll have to purchase, and the longer it will take me to achieve my goal of ultimate ruddy panditude.

Show me the optimum Wincest!

There's several threads on this forum that have varied answers - one says it takes 5 whole generations for the inbreeding "buff" or impact to fully go away. But it does have less of an impact as you go down in generations and get further distance from the two animals in their relationship. Main ones to really avoid though are just parents/children and siblings.

Honestly, though, as far as the game goes (not real life in other words), inbreeding doesn't always have negative effects. And some animals you're just not going to worry about after time - peafowl for instance LOL.

So if I put cousins together, will it still notify that they're going to inbreed, or does it keep quiet about it?

That's a good question and I'm not really sure of the answer to that - sorry, there's not a huge amount of confirmation past siblings/parents/children beyond the fact that the genetics are impacted by it. :(
Well, I guess I'll have to find out the hard way.
And given how long it is taking to sell off Red Pandas (everything involving the online trading lags horribly), I'm getting tempted to just start releasing them.
In the game, I think it only notifies between siblings and parents.
From my breeding, the game doesn't determine breeding any combos other than sibling to sibling or parent to child as inbreeding... so Technically you can breed with grandparents, cousins, uncles/aunts with no repercussions

Depends because you could have a cousin just on the side of one parent. IE Lion has two mates. Those Offspring from both females would be half cousins. I do think you'd get a big red notification about those too.
