Water depth 0cm
I had a nice, large deep water habitat for my grey seals, or so I thought. But when I installed them, their welfare was crud because evidently there wasn't any deep water. It was significantly deeper than 4 meters deep, and there was a huge amount of water overall, so I don't get it. The animals were swimming around in the water, so it was evidently accessible.

I'm trying to remodel the enclosure now. I took all the land out and filled it with water, just to see, and it evidently has 0cm depth. I don't get it.

We had something before about the under water feeders won't work unless they're at 6m or more but too much more also made them not work. When I tried working on this though, all I got was a constant error saying water not deep enough. Even when I had dug a hole to the other side of the world.

I think it's all a bit bugged at the moment.

Some of the animals, Crocodiles are another example. They do require a massive amount of water and a very small bit of land. It doesn't look natural to the eye and seems as though you're not giving them enough room, but you are.

A screen would help and also how many seals are actually in there, the more you have the more space they need obviously and I'm fairly cetain that goes for deep water as well. And it has to be one area of water with the required depth so that it counts, not several smaller deep areas. So if the game tells you to build 100m2 of it make sure that one area of deep water covers at least 100m2 of the overall water area.

If you didn't already check, try using the heat map for traversable area and select different seals to look for any problems. Different sized animals can access different areas of your habitat. It's usually wise to check both an adult male and female and at least one youngling.

Thanks all. I had only three seals and it is a huge enclosure with lots of deep water area. After I drained it and recontoured the land, it seems to be working. For some reason, one of my three seals couldn't get into the water, and I think that is why I was getting the not enough space message. Maybe that seal was smaller than the others?

After playing with the water expansion for a bit, it seems the 0 cm thing is the value one always gets for deep water habitat when there is no animal placed in it yet. That's a bit challenging, as I'd like to be able to see what the total area is before I put the animals in. This only seems to be a thing with the deep water area, as the water surface area and land surface area values are displayed when the enclosure is empty.

Anyway, thanks all. It seems to be working properly now.

Yes, also land and water surface areas are usually a bit less for animals than what it shows in the habitat overview, bc as I said not every animal can access every part of a habitat. After a while you'll have a sense of how large an area is. Or if you need tools for that, you can blueprint some construction pieces that cover eg a 20x20 area (400²) to estimate what you're building.

Space calculations are bugged as all hell. Sometimes they don't calculate immediately, or get it wrong or somesuch.
Sometimes it shows up as 0 because the animal somehow got stuck in a wall or underground. Sometimes it shows up as 0 because the idiotic Grey Seals had their pups on the tiny little island I made so people could see them better (over half my Grey Seals have been born on that tiny island), and which isn't really accessible to seal pups that can only swim in the shallows.
Seriously. I know making fancy islands for seals seems like a good idea, but it isn't. Archipelagos are better.

My solution? Move a single barrier post a tiny bit. Force the game to recalculate. Sometimes it fixes itself.

Oh yeah, and when you're making water, don't forget to smooth the banks thoroughly. Make sure all the underwater area is accessible and there are no weird overhangs.
