I do have some fast breeders but I do the same as you Hlaine
I pause and sort out issues then carry on. (I always pause while building as that is when the Zoo can run out of control if my attention is focused on building a new habitat or landscaping etc)
Otherwise I'll leave it on normal or put it on 2-2.5x slower, to have a more relaxing animal management in my zoo. Plus that way I can see the baby animals for longer (so cute :3)
I have two exceptions to this. One is a zoo which is basically a storage zoo for breeding (ie. an extended trade center for when I get over 50), and that zoo I run on 5x slower.... because I would prefer to have all the animals in the trade center with no aging at all, but have just run out of space.
The second exception is if I am building a dedicated zoo for an upcoming community challenge that involves breeding. In that case, I will sometimes run it at 5x slower prior to the start of the challenge, since I need to have animals in to make money to create the zoo to begin with. But then once the challenge actually begins I raise it back up to level 1.
Sandbox I always turn aging off, I like to relax when I'm playing sandbox and not worry about death.
