Animals that just won't each other?
I've found lists that show which animals benefit from being around each other, but are there ones for animals that can just coexist, without freaking each other out or killing each other? ie: Hippos and Flamingos can safely share a habitat. It won't show up on their profile, and they won't add any benefit, but they will live together without any problems, so long as they have adequate space.

Is there a list of just this or do I need to just experiment? TBH, I found out about the hippo/flamingo things from Googling hippo and seeing pics of several real ones in the wild standing around with flamingos.

this is a spreadsheet with all that info excluding the last DLC
Or there is http://planetzoopedia.com/ just click the Expanded animal compatibility box if you'd like to see suggestions for animal compatibility that do not share a biome or continent.

I found out (by accident) that jaguars wont attack/kill tortoises, at least if they arent hungry, dont know if they would kill them when there isnt enough food for them

You'd think a jaguar would kill ANYTHING you put with it.

I generally play Free-play mode and mix everything for creativity. But prior to being able to switch off terrain and other welfare concerns, I have been able to reasonably mix species together.

Bongos & Okapi's can mix. Nyala's also go together as a trio since they have tropical biome adaptability.
Chimps & Gorillas can coexist. The Mandrills are a little trickier. But both species of Lemur can live with Chimps & Gorillas.
Hippos & Nile Monitors have compatible habitat terrain ratios -but I have never put them in an enclosure together with predation & fear active.
Elephants & Lions are similar with a bit of careful terrain negotiation (again not tested in anything except free-play)
You could theoretically mix Chimps, Gorillas, Lemurs, Pygmy Hippos, Bongos & Okapi into the same enclosure.
Bengal Tigers & Indian Elephants have similar terrain requirements so it is possible to house thm together. Whether these is actually feasible with predation & fear active is another matter altogether.
Gharials & Flamingos (again predation & fear might be a problem)

These are the combos I can remember working off the top of my head. I tend to stay away from Franchise mode out of a mix of creative freedom and intermittent internet connection (mostly the latter).
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Slightly connected to this I'd like to understand why the limit for animals doesn't adjust with size of habitat.

So I know someone will reply and say "it does!, that's what the info panels show you" so to be clear what I mean is, based on some assumptions:
- max group size = 20 animals
- min area for 20 animals = 4,000m^2
- min area for 100% happiness for 20 animals = 6,000m^2 (let's call this the max area... ie any more doesn't bring benefit)

if I create an area of 15,000m^2 then why can't 2 groups exist and, on occasion, there may be territory battles and/or animals moving from group to the other enabling genetic diversity.

The scenario i'd love to achieve would be a pride of Lions with a roaming group of bachelors who may challenge for alpha status, creating an elderly single male or killing him off

I found this on here. Enter the animal, number of males, number of females, and it should give you the needed habitat size.

Yeah thanks, aware of this and used before. What I mean, and if I am wrong then that would make me very happy, is that IF I make a huge enclosure why should i still be limited to 1 group? If I achieve an enclosure big enough to house the biggest group possible TWICE, then why couldn't 2 groups of the same species co-exist as they do in the wild
