also as the above poster said, animals can arrive injured from the animal market.
as for compatible, i've never had the Zoopedia be wrong, and i've found combos as well outside of it that work too (granted they do not get a enrichment bonus for being housed with non-compatible animals, but they CAN live together in peace)
the combos i've tried, that worked, are:
- Indian Rhino / Indian Elephant / Indian Peafowl
- Bongo / Okapi / Baird's Tapir
- Pangolin / Galapagos Tortoise
- Dall's Sheep / Reindeer
sadly flamingos cannot go with saltwater crocodiles :( i had hoped it would work, but it does not
I think as long as there are no herbivore/carnivore mixes looking at the continent/biome setup will help pinpoint those that could live together peacefully, space permitting.
Just remember that the more types of animals in the habitat the more work the zoo keeper has to do to feed them. They don't just go to the nearest feeder and work their way out. They will go to the nearest feeder for the animal they are placing food down for and continue on until no more needs to be placed for that animal. They will then go back to the entry area and start placing the next animals food... rinse and repeat for each animal. I spotted this with my savannah habitat and once I hit 5 species they did start struggling as only one can feed at a time.
oh i know, my african herds exhibit has dedicated zookeepers just for that. But it also has almost every compatible african herbivore (other than elephants, they get their own)
sadly i tried to get Sable antelope and gemsbok to be happy together, but they would never be happy with the ratio of terrain. Gemsbok want too much sand for the sable's liking
They do work with (pygmy) Hippos!
Apart from that: Peafowl, Giant Ant-eater, colombian capucin and lamas go well together too!
