If you often do overhead viewing paths you could create an overhead area and that could be the roof and the area underneath will be classed as shelter, add walls to help keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.
Just keep playing until you figure out how it works. I am still learning but creating a semicircle or square area is pretty simple even without research for the fancier items.
Do you use the heat maps? The icon in bottom left corner in-game. There is a heat-map for "Shelter" and when this is on, you click an animal and it will show in blue-color what areas are shelter for them.
I was wondering if the roof alone was enough for heat/cold purposes. I know it works for shelter purpose from the rain. My most minimalistic ones are usually 4 roof segments and a column to *hold it up*
Yeah I have done this before as well.
I read online it's possible to use the terrain tool to build a small hill, then hollow it out to create a cave. I haven't been able to try it out myself though. I think it's how the Snow Leopard cave is made in the first tutorial mission.
