Do the wolves have enough traversable area?
Are all the wolves the same species?
Is the sex ratio ideal?
Was the wolf already injured from a previous fight or illness and then fought for alpha status?

What I think Crystyanyan is getting at is the fact arctic wolves and timber wolves can't go in the same habitat. They'll fight and kill each other like they're two completely different species, which is silly and should be changed.

Because Timber wolf = Grey wolf, Arctic wolf = Grey wolf, but Arctic wolf /= Timber wolf. They are both subspecies of Grey wolf. They can interbreed but generally do not.

Same thing with the tigers. Bengal and Siberian tigers are subspecies of tiger, and they don't go in the same habitat either.

Another real world reason could be suggested that the better zoos concerned with species preservation tend to not mix subspecies.

I think that's a decision that should be left up to the players. Yes, they're different subspecies, but unlike with the tigers (at least that I can think of) there are examples of arctic wolves and timber wolves sharing a habitat without issue. Mixbreeding isn't in the game anyway so that shouldn't matter much.
