You have to bring them in and then pull them back to place. Also, it is easier move around to the corners instead of one long drawing. The best and quickest advice I can give you is watch PaulsLey you tube on Starter Layout. He shows how to do grids and the various tricks with barriers. Actually, all of his videos are well worth a watch.
This makes the entire map one grid / building item and makes grid placement a snap.
I warn you in advance however that this also makes putting things into your steam workshop slower and slightly problematic. Since everything is part of one grid / building the number of pieces quickly adds up, and after a certain number they cannot be uploaded to your workshop as separate entities until you split them off from the rest. And actually trying to separate them can cause performance / lag / fps issues as the game struggles with the large number of pieces.
