If so, this is because once the animal is not linked to the zoo the zoo can't inform the other animals the name of their parents and siblings.
I figured this out a while back after some testing but it is a theory and not proven fact by the developers so I may not be 100% correct but here goes.
The info about an animal includes the ID for it's parents. The zoo also seems to contain some basic information about every animal linked to it and seems to include the ID and name and its current status. If the animal is in the zoo it's name will be updated on any children's data record. If the animal is traded out, died or released this will, in the short term I suspect, be kept in the zoo file with ID name and status, but it will likely eventually disappear. The parent info page does not include a list of its children instead, each child linked/in the zoo attributed to the parent will update it's parents info page if it is available. So, animals can be transferred into other zoos, and the name will be lost, but, when you transfer the animal back, the names will come back which infers that every living animal will have a reference to its parents ID whatever their status. At some point after the animals cease to exist in your zoo the name will eventually disappear until they are reintroduced.. So, in theory, if you buy back your animal from someone else, assuming the reference remains the same it will update to it's childrens files.
So, a quick refresher ..
Children have a reference to their parents by their ID. This will give access to any information the zoo may have on the animal with that ID. If there is no record of that ID it will be classed as an unknown parent. If the parent has recently died, traded out or released, this reference will be updated, but at some point it may disappear unless at the point of decease/trade/release the zoo keeps a permanent copy of that animals name until no children are left to request it.
As a reminder this is just a theory on how it could work based on my tests a few months back when this query was raised. If I can find the detailed post I made about it I will add it here.
Okay, the post was on steam so if you do a discussion search for 'Parents Become Unknown...' it should be the first if not only one in the list. I give a very detailed breakdown while doing a bunch of tests transferring animals between zoos etc to identify why parents become unknown when they were known. It may not be exactly your problem but it may help explain your particular problem.
I've realised this current issue is linked with one random springbok that's crated up. I don't even know why he is. I can restart the game and it seems to be normal, I can select animals and their info window pops up just like normal, but as soon as I click the crate confining this poor springbok it screws the game again. There's no way to sell it or release it or anything without selecting it so I don't know what the way forward is.
I have basic game and Arctic DLC, maybe it was a glitch because some of those subscribed blueprints required Deluxe version. That's all I can think of.
It started after I subscribed. I tried restarting game before deleting subscriptions, no help, only after removing subscriptions.
